With a trip to the postseason a near certainty, the UC Davis men's basketball team prepares for its final regular-season games this weekend - two games that carry huge implications regarding the playoffs.

The Aggies, 20-5 overall and 16-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, take on 19-6, 15-5 Cal State San Bernardino tonight and UC Riverside on Saturday. Davis is ranked fourth in the nation and comes off a disappointing weekend in which it lost to Cal State Bakersfield 86-83 in double overtime.

The loss will make it difficult for the Aggies to host the Western Regionals, since they find themselves behind Central Washington University in the latest West region poll, and in a tie for second with Hawaii Pacific University.

"If we can win both games, and Central slips in their (PAC-West) tournament, then we have an outside chance," UCD head coach Brian Fogel said. "It could happen, their tournament is in Hawaii, and they have to play three straight days. (UCD hosting Regionals) is a possibility."

If the Aggies win both games this weekend, it will be their fifth-straight conference title.

"I've told my players all year that we have to make a name for ourselves," Fogel said. "We have been labeled as the defending national champs, and a lot of the guys on the team have no connection to that. They weren't a part of that team or the other championship teams. To be conference champs would be special because we need to establish our own identity."

San Bernardino is on an 11-game winning streak, the longest streak in Division II, with its last loss coming to Davis. The Coyotes' successful games come, in large part, from the play of guards Phil Johnson and Jimmy Allapag, who average 13.8 and 11.4 points per game, respectively.

"They are a good team that has really come together," said Fogel of the Coyotes. "We have to be able to contain Allapag and know where Johnson is at all times."

UCR guard Toby Vares averages 13.1 to lead the Highlanders in scoring. Vares is the only Riverside player averaging in double figures, but he is followed closely by Antwon Ellis, who averages 9.7 PPG.

"Riverside has a better road record than home record; some teams are like that," Fogel said. "We need to win both games and can't slip. We are playing for seedings in the National tournament."

For both games, tipoff is at 8 p.m. For Friday evening, disco attire is encouraged, as it should be. But if that wasn't enough incentive to go, this weekend might be your last opportunity to catch the Aggies at home this season.
