UCD men make finals; women are OT victims

Bee Sports Staff
(Published March 8, 1998)

The UC Davis men's basketball team is off to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, but the Aggies' women lost a heart-breaker Saturday night in their bid to advance past the regionals.

Both games were against Seattle Pacific.

The men had a surprisingly easy win over Seattle Pacific, 80-52 at the Rec Hall. The women suffered a 91-82 overtime loss on their opponent's home court.

The men (28-2) are headed to Louisville, Ky., where they will face West Texas A&M (26-4), the South Central champion, in the first round Wednesday, March 18. The Aggies, led by sophomore center Jason Cox's 20 points and Justis Durkee's 16 points and 13 rebounds, avenged one of their two losses this season.

The Aggies' defense, the second-best in the division, held the Falcons to 25 percent shooting and, unlike the first meeting, Davis enjoyed a rebounding edge.

The UCD women, playing in their fourth straight regional title game, finished 23-7 and had an eight-game winning streak snapped.

They overcame a 30-25 halftime lead to gain a 71-71 tie at the end of regulation but in the process had four starters foul out.
