*** Regional Digest: No. 5 UCLA rolls past Hornets in men's soccer

Seth George's goal at 31 minutes into the first half proved to be the game-winner as No. 5 UCLA defeated Sacramento State 3-0 in a men's soccer game at Fred Anderson Field on Saturday.

Carlos Bocanegra scored the Bruins' second goal on a header after a pass from Ryan Futagaki 10 minutes into the second half. Forward Sean Walker, formerly of Jesuit High School, scored a late goal on an assist from Bocanegra.

The victory improved UCLA, the defending national champion, to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Hornets dropped to 0-11-1 overall, 0-5 in the MPSF.

Football

Andre Shipley rushed for 108 yards in 21 carries and scored on a two-yard run as Sacramento City College defeated Shasta College 16-7 at Hughes Stadium.

Lance Gresko threw two touchdown passes and James Irvin rushed for 171 yards as Sierra defeated Marin 30-21 in Rocklin.

Volleyball

Carissa Buie, Angela Lewis and Rebekah Capel each had 15 kills to lead Sac State to a 15-7, 15-9, 15-6 victory over the University of Montana in a Big Sky Conference match in Missoula, Mont. Coach Debby Colberg won her 599th career match for Sac State (14-8, 9-1 Big Sky).

UC Davis rallied from a 14-9 deficit to win the third game and later received five kills from junior hitter Brandi Glenn in the fifth, as the Aggies (12-8, 8-7 California Collegiate Athletic Association) upset No. 24 Grand Canyon 15-8, 8-15, 18-16, 6-15, 16-14.

Basketball

UC Davis, the defending Division II national champion rated as high as No. 4 in preseason polls, will open the 1998-98 men's season with a televised game against host Stanford. The game will be televised in the Sacramento area on Comcast Cable channel 17 and in Davis on TCI Cable channel 61.
