Professor Alder continues to serve as an undergraduate adviser in the department. In addition he is chair of the Steering Committee of the NSF-sponsored campus project, Minority Undergraduate Research Participation in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences. At the national level he chairs three MAA committees.
Professor Chakerian participated this summer in the AMS-IMS-SIAM Summer Research Conference on Finsler Geometry held in Seattle, presenting a paper, Integral Geometry in Finsler Spaces, which will appear in the conference proceedings. Earlier in the summer he taught a course in geometry for teachers under the auspices of the Northern California Mathematics Project.
Professor Kreith continues to act as MAT program adviser. He is involved in various curriculum material development activities for secondary schools, including the publication of articles in the Springer Verlag student magazine Quantum. He is currently working with the editors of that magazine on a special 1996 issue commemorating the 25th anniversary of The Club of Rome's study on The Limits to Growth.
Professor Stein has completed a book, Mathematics: Truth, Beauty, Jobs, which will be published by John Wiley in the spring. This is a trade book (not a text book) designed to make everyone appreciate and love mathematics. In addition he has written several expository papers, to appear in Mathematics Magazine and The Mathematical Intelligencer. His work on the combinatorics of identities will appear in Algebra Universalis.
Professor Tamura
continues his research on semigroups,
with recent results reported in the annual Symposium
on Semigroups. In addition he writes poems in
Japanese and in English in both the Haiku
(5, 7, 5 syllables) and Tanka
(5, 7, 5, 7, 7) formats, with many published and
earning awards. He also writes commentary on programs
of Japanese overseas broadcasting.
