Faculty keeps success in Extramural Research and
Educational Grants
The Mathematics Faculty brings a large number of
scientific and educational research grants to the campus.
Because of the nature of research, the typical size of
a scientific research grant in mathematics is small compared
to experimental sciences, and the competition
among mathematicians is extremely high.
About 63% of all the mathematics faculty have
received extramural grants (including research fellowships)
during 1995, and the total over $1.2 million (excluding fellowships)
have been awarded during the annual funding cycle that has ending
date in this calendar year. It is a considerable success of the
Davis faculty, because
a recent survey shows that even among the top 30 U.S. research
universities, in average a much smaller percentage
of faculty receives extramural
grants.
In the following list, (E) indicates an educational research grant
and (F) a research fellowship. All others are scientific research
grants.
- A. Cheer: NSF.
- J. Gravner: Slovenian government.
- J. Hass and A. Thompson: NSF.
- J. Hunter: NSF.
- K. Kreith: NSF (E).
- A. Krener: Office of Naval Research.
- A. Mogilner: Program in Mathematics and Molecular Biology
Fellowship (F).
- M. Mulase: NSF.
- E. G. Puckett: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, NSF,
Los Alamos National Laboratory, and DOE.
- J. Quastel: NSF.
- T. Sallee: Eisenhower Foundation (E).
- A. Schwarz: NSF.
- E. Silvia: California Math Project (E).
- D. Stuart: NSF.
- J. B. Temple: NSF.
- C. Tracy: NSF.
- A. Thompson: Alfred P. Sloan Foundation (F), NSF.
- R. Wets: NSF.
In addition to these individual research grants, Professors
Hass, Hunter, Puckett and Tracy have a joint NSF grant for
Scientific Computational Research Environment.
