- Methods of Teaching Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics requires every student who accepts a TAship to complete MAT390, taught every Fall quarter. Most students take this in their first year, even if they are supported by a fellowship. - Overall requirement
Courses used to fulfill the Master's requirements can also be used to fulfill the Ph.D. requirement. At least 6 graduate courses must be completed with A or A-. Students whose cumulative GPA falls below 3.0 may be subject to dismissal. 1 unit of GGAM mini-conference (as a 290) is strongly encouraged to take either in the first or second year. Furthermore, students are encouraged to attend the mini-conference every year. - Required general courses
MAT 119A and MAT 201 (Analysis) A, B, C
The required general courses cannot be taken on an S/U basis. A GPA of 3.0 must be maintained in 201ABC. - Numerics
8 units from 226ABC and 228ABC - Field of specialization
Minimum of 15 units in a field of specialization, of which at least 4 units are outside of Mathematics. For a list of suggested curricula in sample fields, see the GGAM webpage and consult with your potential thesis adviser. - Advanced mathematics
4 200-level math courses EXCLUDING: 1) courses used to fulfill "Required general courses" and "Numerics" requirements above; and 2) courses whose numbers are 280 and beyond. - Preliminary Exam
Ph.D. students should pass the Preliminary Examination by the beginning of Winter quarter of their second year. Indicate the date passed. - Dissertation Topic
Indicate your dissertation topic. - Dissertation Adviser
Indicate your dissertation adviser and the date it was confirmed. - Dissertation
Completed. Please list the date it was filed and the title. - Dissertation Submitted to arXiv
Provide the arXiv reference number for your submitted dissertation. - Qualifying exam
Please list the date the exam was passed.
