Abstract: we give an introduction to special Lagrangian geometry and explain why it is important to understand singular special Lagrangian varieties. We describe recent progress in understanding special Lagrangian varieties with isolated conical singularities -- a large and interesting class of singular special Lagrangian varieties. We describe results obtained using a number of different methods: (i) a fusion of results from algebraically completely integrable systems and spectral theory of the Laplacian and (ii) 'gluing' (singular perturbation theory) methods from geometric analysis.
