I'll survey various recent developments in the study of hyperbolic 3-manifolds and Kleinian groups, by focussing on the simplest non-trivial special case of 2-generator groups. Recent developments include tameness and the ending lamination conjecture, and I will discuss some of the applications to the study of 3-manifolds.
