I will consider various classes of Sobolev mappings with constraints on their value or on the value of their gradients. The main question I will study is that of the approximability of a given mapping by smooth mappings in the same class and the identification of the "singularities" (the obstructions to this type of approximation). These problems arise in various contexts in calculus of variations. Some interesting relationships with topology and geometry and applications to calculus of variations are discussed.
