Shrinkwrapping, and the tameness of hyperbolic 3-manifolds

(This is joint work with Dave Gabai). We introduce a new technique called *shrinkwrapping* for finding CAT(-1) surfaces in hyperbolic manifolds. Using this, we show that a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold with finitely generated fundamental group is geometrically and topologically tame.
