When looking at geometric structures on a manifold (whether it be hyperbolic, complex, symplectic, etc.) it is very easy to forget about the underlying topology of the manifold. However, it is not surprising that when trying to deform the geometric structure, topology plays a crucial role in limiting what you are allowed to do. I will try to explain this idea, mostly through examples.
