Non-Haken 3-manifolds and small alternating links (part 1)

I will give a brief overview of results on Haken 3-manifolds and then survey known results on constructing non-Haken 3-manifolds. I will then explain technology due to Menasco and at the basis of many spectacular results about alternating links.
Next week's talk will give a particular application of Menasco's techniques which enables us to construct some interesting non-Haken 3-manifolds.
