In the 1970's, Jaco and Shalen and independently Johannson described the decomposition of a compact 3-manifold which is now called the JSJ decompsition after them. There have been many algebraic generalisations of their results. Their results have also been generalized to higher dimensional manifolds but only when the curvature is non-positive. In this talk I will discuss generalizations of the JSJ decomposition of a 3-manifold to the setting of PDn pairs (the algebraic analogue of a compact n-manifold with boundary).
