Small genus knots in lens spaces

If the exterior of a knot K in a lens space contains a genus g properly embedded incompressible orientable surface with just one boundary component that intersects the meridian of K at least 4g-1 times then K is at most 1-bridge. We will outline the proof and discuss some consequences.
