Abstract: The dynamics of the tropical atmosphere are organized over an extremely broad range of length and time scales. I will discuss some recent multiscale asymptotics which isolate certain intraseasonal phenomena in the tropics and, in which, new and interesting quasi-linear and nonlinear PDEs have been derived. I intend this talk to be a broad, pedagogical overview of the subject and will emphasize current research areas.
