I will give an overview of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, including what is known about its cohomology ring. This is the space that describes all complex structures (or equivalently hyperbolic structures) on a surface of fixed topological type. Most of our present knowledge of the cohomology comes from algebraic geometry. However, I will describe some recent results stemming from hyperbolic and symplectic geometry which completely determine the structure of the second cohomology group.
