The goal of this talk is to connect a projection diagram of a knot or link to geometric and topological information about the link complement. In particular, I will address three questions: Can we tell from a projection diagram if the complement of the link is hyperbolic? Can we tell whether a particular Dehn filling of the link yields a hyperbolic manifold? Can we use the diagram to get a good estimate on the genus of the link? I will give concrete answers to these questions for links that have sufficiently complicated diagrams. This is joint work with Jessica Purcell.
