The Murasugi sum is an operation to combine two knots, which depends on a choice of Seifert surfaces for the knots and also on a choice of disks along which to do the sum. Gabai proved that under certain conditions many properties of the Seifert surfaces are preserved under Murasugi sum. I will define Murasugi sum and state some basic properties and applications of this powerful tool.
