Higher-order invariants are obtained from analyzing the module structure of the homology of certain solvable covers. These can be viewed as generalizations of the classical Alexander module. Higher-order invariants have been used by T. Cochran to study knots and by S. Harvey to study 3-manifolds. Recently, we used similar techniques to define higher-order Alexander invariants of algebraic planar curves. We will give an overview of higher-order invariants and discuss some recent results concerning those related to algebraic planar curves.
