Free-Surface Problems in 2D Irrotational Fluids

PDE Seminar

Speaker: David Ambrose, Clemson
Location: 3106 MSB
Start time: Tue, Nov 7 2006, 2:10PM

In this talk, I will describe my proofs of short-time well-posedness of various free surface problems in fluids. This will include well-posedness of vortex sheets with surface tension, water waves, and Hele-Shaw flows. (The results on water waves are joint with Nader Masmoudi.) I will describe a common framework for treating each of these problems, and will demonstrate how to perform energy estimates for each problem. This framework involves first reformulating the evolution equations using an arclength parameterization and convenient dependent variables.
