This is a tutorial that is associated to the Math 290 reading seminar on waves and free-surface flows. We will try to introduce the notion of how shape and smoothness of the free surface (waves) interacts with the motion of the fluid. Concepts such as surface tension, mean curvature, second fundamental form, induced metric, surface Laplacians, and general coordinate systems will be reviewed.
