Description
The initial value problem for a nonlinear hyperbolic system of
conservation laws may fail to have a solution for all time. Since a
conservation law is an integral relation it may be satisfied by a "weak"
solution that is merely measurable and bounded.
In this talk we will introduce the Riemann initial value problem and how
one can find a solution via Lax's theorem. If time allows we will consider
systems with more general initial data and use Glimm's method to find a
solution.
