Given a surface in a hyperbolic 3-manifold, how much can it be flattened via isotopy? We will discuss how to use normal surface theory, the thick-thin decomposition of hyperbolic 3-manifolds, and a theorem about geodesic triangulations to obtain universal curvature bounds for surfaces in hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
