A natural question is whether all irreducible Heegaard splittings of a closed 3 manifold have the same genus. The answer is no. In my talk I will construct 3-manifolds which have irreducible splittings of arbitrarily high genus, and if time permits, discuss some criteria for the irreducibility of such splittings.
