The complex of curves of a surface S, C(S), is a powerful mathematical object. When S is a Heegaard surface of a 3-manifold, C(S) relates geometric and combinatorial properties of subcomplexes of C(S) with topological properties of such manifold and the associated splitting. Since this is an introductory talk, we will be discussing basic material with a minimum of topological requirements.
