Material boundary reconstruction or material interface reconstruction (MIR) is the problem of reconstructing an interface between materials over a given domain. Each grid cell in the domain has associated volume fractions which are the material percentages present in the given cells. Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) methods use volume fractions to estimate the interface. VOF methods naturally lend themselves to conservation of mass of each fluid and do not require previous state knowledge to make changes in global topology of the front.
