Constructing singular incompressible surfaces from Heegaard splittings of 3-manifolds.

We show how to find incompressible surfaces with double curves but no triple points from Heegaard diagrams. Two approaches are given to lifting such surfaces to embeddings in finite sheeted covering spaces. This is joint work with Iain Aitchison and Abby Thompson.
