In statistical mechanics, the "square ice" model represents ice crystals as water molecules on a square grid. This model is related to such disparate structures as alternating sign matrices, fully packed loops, and relations between monotone triangles. Though the model is from statistical mechanics, it is through combinatorics that we learn about these interesting properties.
