"Extended" topological field theory can be thought of as a way of describing the "local" structure of topological field theory. In an axiomatic approach this amounts to assigning algebraic data not only to spatial slices of spacetime, as in the Atiyah/Segal approach to TQFT, but also to codimension-2 surfaces, or boundaries in space. I will describe some preliminary work with Jeffrey Morton on constructing such extended topological field theories based on flat G-connections for a compact Lie group G.
