The Kadison-Singer Problem in Mathematics and Engineering

Colloquium

Speaker: Pete Casazza, University of Missouri
Location: 1147 MSB
Start time: Tue, Apr 26 2011, 4:10PM

We will see that the famous, intractable 1959 Kadison-Singer Problem in C*-Algebras is equivalent to fundamental unsolved problems in a dozen different areas of research in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and engineering - which makes this one of the most important open problems in analysis today. This also gives all these areas common ground on which to interact as well as explaining why each area has volumes of literature on their problem without a satisfactory resolution. We now have forms of the Kadison-Singer Problem that any graduate student can work on as soon as they know the definition of a Hilbert space. We will look at as many forms of the problem as we have time for.
