Poincaré created the theory of 3-manifolds almost single-handedly between 1892 and 1904. But it was only after his statement of the Poincaré conjecture in 1904, that other mathematicians began to take much interest. In 1908 Tietze gave a critique of Poincaré's work that raised new questions about 3-manifolds and introduced interesting new examples, and he was followed by Dehn who enriched the subject with new methods between 1910 and 1914.
