Applied mathematics for problems in atmospheric sciences
PDE and Applied Math SeminarSpeaker: | Joseph Biello, UCD |
Location: | 1147 MSB |
Start time: | Tue, Nov 22 2011, 3:10PM |
I will describe some open problems in the tropical atmospheric sciences which include large scale waves and the organization of weather patterns. Computational methods alone cannot resolve the questions that are being asked, such as why certain organized patterns occur and what will happen to these patterns as the climate changes. I will discuss different applied mathematical methods such as asymptotics for the PDEs of the tropical atmosphere and some stochastic methods also which we have used to develop models for these phenomena. Opportunities for graduate student research projects will also be presented.
