We prove that compact negatively curved square complexes are virtually special. As a consequence of results of Haglund and Wise, they have linear and LERF fundamental groups. The results apply to a larger class of cube complexes with malnormal walls. The proofs depend on recent work of Wise on hyperbolic groups with a quasi-convex hierarchy.
