To a ring, R, one can associate a sequence of abelian groups--the algebraic K-theory of R. These groups have been used in topology, number theory, algebraic geometry and physics. We'll discuss the definitions of Quillen and of Milnor (in the case of fields), and describe some of the applications. If there is time, the notion of regulator will also be covered.
