A combinatorial approach to harmonic maps

In joint work with Joel Hass, we have defined combinatorial versions of area and energy, in order to give a combinatorial version of harmonic maps. These maps share some of the properties of smooth harmonic maps, which allows some applications to be obtained in the combinatorial setting.
