Description
The Picard-Fuchs differential equation
that describes the periods of a family of Calabi-Yau
manifolds have very peculiar geometric and
arithmetic properties, which play a key role in mirror
symmetry. In this talk I will describe two closely
related one-parameter families of Calabi-Yau threefolds,
with very different Picard-Fuchs operators.
