A single identity in two variables can raise questions of a combinatorial, algebraic, logical, or model-theoretic nature. The talk will sample some of them. For instance, for every positive integer n the identity xy = y^n x^n y^n x^n implies the identity x^6 y^6 = y^6 x^6 and if n is of the form 3k or 3k + 1 it implies xy = yx.
