How operator algebras are used in topology
Student-Run Geometry/Topology SeminarSpeaker: | Jerry Kaminker, UC Davis |
Location: | 2112 MSB |
Start time: | Tue, May 20 2014, 2:10PM |
This will be a very elementary survey of some of the settings in which C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras have proved useful in topology and geometry. We will start with definitions and examples of operator algebras and then discuss some of the following:
a) Classification of manifolds and C*-algebras
b) Geometric group theory and C*-algebras
c) Knot theory and von Neumann algebras.
