Motivated by considering molecular symmetries, we define the topologi- cal symmetry group TSG(S3,Γ) of a graph Γ embedded in S3 as the sub- group of the automorphism group of Γ induced by homeomorphisms of the pair (S3,Γ). We discuss particular groups that can and cannot occur as TSG(S3,Γ) for some graph Γ embedded in S3. Then we consider similar questions for graphs embedded in other 3-manifolds.
