Inspired by topological string theory, one can define a moduli space of maps from algebraic curves into projective spaces. In certain cases one may define an intersection theory on the moduli space that counts certain enumerative invariants. For example, one can obtain the classical result that five points in the projective plane determine a unique conic in this manner.
