Singular metrics on vector bundles and some applications

Singular metrics on complex line bundles have been used a lot in various contexts in geometry for quite a long time. I will discuss some problems that arise when one tries to work with the analogous notion for complex vector bundles. Then I hope to illustrate the usefulness of singular metrics on vector bundles even in a very simple situation: vector bundles over the unit disk.
