Using the example of Kitaev's quantum double model, I will give an introduction to topologically ordered systems. In the first part of the talk I will outline how we can study the thermodynamic limit of such systems, and how this will allow us to to rigorously recover all properties of the (anyonic) quasiparticle excitations of such systems. In particular, I will argue that it is beneficial to use an operator-algebraic approach, focussing on the local observables of the system.
In the second part I will comment on recent results and work-in-progress with Matthew Cha and Bruno Nachtergaele.
