Motivated by an attempt to describe the excitations of M theory in terms of the fundamental membrane [i.e., replacing strings with pieces of paper!], we present the solution--part I to writing theta series for the exceptional groups. The talk will start with a loose introduction to M theory and the membrane and end up with a discussion of exceptional theta series.
