NSF REU Programs: What, Why, and How

This summer the UC Davis Physics Department will host its fourteenth group of students through the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. The NSF's stated goal is to increase student interest in science education and careers by introducing them to research. On the department's side, graduate recruitment has benefited from the REU program, both directly when former REU students return for graduate school but also in more subtle ways. I will discuss how typical REU programs work in both physics and mathematics, as well as the time commitment needed to run a successful program.
