I will give an introduction to the geometry of nilpotent orbits in Vinberg's theta-groups and explain applications to the representation theory of trigonometric (and rational) Cherednik algebras. I will report on work in progress in the case of symmetric spaces in type A and time permitting, discuss the connection to affine Springer theory.
