Mechanobiology - studying generation and effects of physical forces and movements in cell biology - is a thriving field, yet most attention is paid to the cytoskeleton, a dynamic and mechanically active fibrous scaffold. Meanwhile, the mechanics of the cytosol - the fluid fraction of the cytoplasm - remains not well understood. I will discuss two studies, in which experiment and mathematical modeling were combined to (1) understand whether there is a fluid flow through the motile cell, and if so, whether this flow affects the cell movement, and (2) demonstrate that the flow of the cytosol can be a dominant force that positions cell organelles at the cell center.
There will be a reception with light refreshments from 3:45-4:15 in the lobby of the Mathematical Sciences Building.
