Severi varieties are roughly parameter spaces for curves of fixed homology class and geometric genus on projective surfaces. Harris proved in the 80s that the classical Severi varieties (the Severi varieties of the projective plane) are irreducible. However, very little is known concerning irreducibility for other classes of surfaces. In this talk, I will focus on the case of abelian surfaces and curves of primitive homology class.
