Recent Results in Boundary Layer Theory

I will start by introducing the classical Prandtl's Boundary Layer Theory, which was developed by Ludwig Prandtl and other physicists in the early 1900's to explain the behavior of fluids with low viscosity near physical boundaries. At the core of the theory is an ansatz for the asymptotic behavior of the Navier-Stokes equations in the vanishing viscosity limit. Several mathematical problems have persisted regarding this ansatz (wellposedness and asymptotic stability, for instance). I will discuss a few recent results which address various aspects of these mathematical problems.
Meet the speaker at a reception starting 3:45pm in the MSB lobby. Refreshments will be served.
