Schur polynomials and Lie algebras

I will describe certain Lie algebraic generalizations of the Schur polynomials. Some interesting things happen in particular in the case of orthogonal Lie algebras and I will describe a conjecture about this phenomenon. All of this is very self contained and algebra of classical flavor but I will also try to hint at deeper relations of these Lie theoretic constructions with other parts of mathematics.
