Constructing 4-manifolds

A classical result is that 3-dimensional manifolds can be split into two simple pieces, called handlebodies. I'll describe these and an analogous construction, called a trisection, for 4-manifolds (due to Gay and Kirby) and some interesting relations between the two dimensions.
